It's Dah
Pits! submitted by: TJNut
This Central MA "trail" is at a gravel pit
next to a covered land fill (don't Jeep on the land fill!). It has a few short trails
through the woods with stream crossings (basically along a utility access road). There are
a couple of large open areas with sand dunes and mud puddles depending upon the weather.
This location is extremely popular with dirt-bikers so caution must be used at all times.
In general, I rated this site a 2+ due to some fairly
narrow areas and the real possiblity of getting stuck in the muck. Not a bad place to
practice some new moves or try out new equipment. Bring a friend and a tow strap if it's
rained much recently! |
Ware the Rocks Are
submitted by: TJNut
My very first off-road experience courtesy of the Baystate Jeepers.
Many of the trails in this area are very rocky. I ran this in late March and it was wet
with a considerable amount of mud. There were two large rock hills to climb. The first,
known by the club as "The Elephant's Back" is pretty intimidating, but all that
tried it, made it. Another rock face is called "The Giraffe's Neck" and it is
also interesting, but not as vertical as the Elephant's Back. There are stream crossings,
one or two of which can be above hub level. Finally, a sandy dirt hill, that is known as
"Double Locker Hill" get it? I made it in my stock TJ, but it was very tough.
All in all, a very exciting ride especially for the stock TJ! This run is not for the
newbie! Even though I was (and am) I would not recommend it for those new to Jeeping. It
definitely rates a 3+ if not higher, although damage was limited to rocker panels and one
clutch linkage on a CJ. |
Wonderland

Baystate
Jeepers ran this Central Ma. trail at the
end of April. It was scenic and not overly challenging. One of the first obstacles was
encountered climbing up a runoff with loose rock, sand and boulders. No bypass was
available for this, but all made it without needing help. A another ditch took a bit
of wheel turning and gunning (and a few tugs with the strap for a couple of Jeepers), but
it wasn't all that bad and a bypass was right next to it. Going downhill along another
loose rock and boulder runoff area was interesting due to low traction. There was only one
opportunity for mud lovers - a deeply rutted mud-filled channel. A sand hill was available
for those wanting to attempt it. One ditch crossing was a gas tank killer (hooray
for Tomken's skid!). This was a great place for new Jeepers to get their first experience.
It rates a 2+ overall in my book.

Rattlesnake Gutter
submitted by: TJNut
Another run with the Baystate
Jeepers in the latter part of May.
Our adventure began with a stream crossing and a rock/sand obstacle in a wash. Trail
leaders recommended that only vehicles with tires larger than 30" give it a try.
Well, I booked out to a bypass through the woods and about 500' above the obstacle, but
others (stock too!) gave it a shot. There was also a bypass right next to it, but the
trail (a wash/runoff) was heavy with large boulders that bent two tie rods on this run
(the only damage of the day). This was an excellent trail with bypasses at all the right
areas and plenty of challenges for all. A couple of very nice water crossings at hub-level
that were both fun an scenic. So far, this is my favorite area! It rates a 3 and can be run by Jeepers without a great deal
of experience. |
